Is it true that Guineas consume whole ant beds?

I am new to fowl but I have been told that Guineas can eliminate ants by consuming whole mounds of them. Just wanted to know if this was true. Also, how many guineas would you start off with if I am new and what should I know before I purchase them? Thanks for any info! ~ Carol
