What are the differences between the city of London police and the metropolitan police?

Does the City of London Police Force police the city of london area and the Metropolitan Police Force police the remaining areas in the county of London? Do they act in any different way? I mainly want to know about the area they policed and the differences between them in the nineteenth century.
