Pets-Why do people leave their dogs in the car while they shop for hours?Why not leave the dogs home?

Especially in the summer when it can get dangerously hot quickly? I could see leaving your car running with the ac on and quickly shopping but most people barely crack a window and are gone for hours. The poor dogs are frantic and barking. I am a dog owner and never do that. Is it just stupidity or what?
