What do you think about Dear Abby's advice in this situation?

To start with, if you have valuable things in your dorm room, you should have been more cautious of your belongings. Laptops and things like this are stolen all the time as they are valuable and expensive and highly sought. I might not agree with the manner in which Glen did this, but to me, it does sound like his heart was in the right place. Becuase if he was truly trying to hurt you, he would have just kept all the merchandise and never told you like someone else probably would have done given half the opportunity. If it were me, I would have just thanked him for returning my belongings, asked him never to do this again, and that would have been the end of it. I would have NEVER turned him in becuase yes, it does look like you ruined his life. You removed his scholarship and all. The punishment totally does not fit the crime. Everything in this world is NOT black and white as you would like to think. And this is a perfect example. In a weird, strange way, I really think he was trying to teach you a lesson you totally should learn, not harm you, but in the end, HE was harmed in a major way. Maybe one day, you will do something misguided, but with good intentions and it will bite YOU in the and only then will you realize what you did to this fellow. Shame on you for turning him in.
